PERIOD 9
Periodization:
With the Cold War finally over thanks to Détente and SALT I, America set their focus on domestic policy. As Regan was elected in 1981, the Iran Hostage Crisis ended with the freeing of the hostages after 444 days, a symbol of an era of hopeful peace in foreign policies. Sadly, this era was full of complication foreign affairs, from the invasion of Grenada to driving Iraqis out of Kuwait in Desert Storm. During these foreign events, the Challenger exploded, showing an end in America's involvement in space to the extent it was involved during the Cold War. There were continuous oil shortages in America due to oil spills and OPEC raising prices. Then foreign and domestic policies collided during 9/11 when America began to shift their focus from anti-communism and pro-democracy to anti-terrorism and defensive strategies within the mainland. America continued the interventionist policy with intervention in Afghanistan. Just as Americans began to lose trust in the federal government with the Watergate Scandal during Nixon's administration, Americans lost trust in the government following the impeachment of President Clinton with the Lewinsky Affair.
