PERIOD 7 Part 2
Periodization:
Following World War 1, America's main goal was to maintain and protect the economic boom created by the war. To protect it, Americans went into Isolationism, passing the Emergency Quota Act in fear of immigrants taking jobs and refusing to join League of Nations in fear of another war. The KKK rose in prominence during this time period as well, since they were against immigrants. The First Red Scare was another example of this want to protect, as it resulted in the deportation of suspect communists/people who were against America. Another way to protect America was the Prohibiton, which outlawed alcohol in efforts to reduce alcoholism and encourage women's rights. However, in response to the Prohibition, Gangsterism was created with Al Capone being a big alcohol distributor. Another way Americans tried to protect the country/its economic boom was with the Scopes Trial. John Dewey was advocating for better science education including evolution, leading to a separation fo church and state debate in Congress. John T. Scopes decided to teach evolution, and was convicted. To maintain the economic boom, America saw a rise in consumerism and buying on credit. Americans were after the newest technology like the automobile and radios, to display the economic dominance. Sadly, this attempt of buying on credit to maintain the economic boom actually led to an economic downfall - the Great Depression. Another factor causing the Great Depression was the overproduction created during the First World War, and the underconsumption of those products. This overproduction led to farmers having to deal with the worst part of the depression, and many farmers also had to deal with the Dust Bowl. In efforts to end the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the New Deal. Also with the end of WW1 and the Treaty of Versailles was the rise of Totalitarian/Imperialistic leaders. Japan invaded Manchuria, and Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin rose to power. Germans felt cheated with the Treaty of Versailles, so they attempted to gain back lost land and grew their military power. Another war began, and once again the US attempted to stay neutral. Then, on December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese, and America had to get involved, pulling the country out of the Great Depression.
